How New Mac App Store Sandboxing Rules Affect 4D Developers
In mid-2011, 4D announced the ability for 4D developers to make their qualifying applications available on Apple’s Mac App Store using 4D v12. As underlined in the dedicated App Store section of our Web site, all apps submitted to the Mac App Store must adhere to Apple’s guidelines, which can change at any time.
Apple has recently announced that as of March 2012, they will be implementing new, more restrictive sandboxing requirements for all software distributed through the Mac App Store. While adding additional burden to developers, this step is intended to ensure that programs distributed through the Mac App Store are safe and stable.
This change has implications for 4D developers who wish to distribute their apps through this channel – but not necessarily for Mac OS apps that can be obtained otherwise. Apps that do not implement sandboxing will continue to be valid and run on Mac OS X, and can continue to be distributed and purchased by means not involving the Mac App Store.
At this time, we cannot guarantee that your existing applications will meet the final Apple requirements for the App Store. We will closely follow the new rules from Apple and see how our product meets their requirements. In the meantime, we recommend our customers to focus on the classic distribution channels.
