Frequently Asked Questions about R-releases

How are new features developed in R-releases?

Each new feature is developed exclusively in the main development branch. Each feature is developed in a way that allows us to deactivate it. Then, for each feature, we perform automated and/or manual testing according to the feature type. (We give priority to automated testing, which can be re-performed anytime.)

Smart Business App Development

As a company policy, 4D sells and supports not only its current version, 4D v15, but the previous version of the product line as well. If you’re still using 4D v14, you get the support you expect, and the migration guidance you'll want when the time comes.

Migrate

Did you know there's a newer version of the 4D product line available?  4D v15 gives you everything that 4D v14 has to offer, as well as new features that will make both developers and end users much more productive.

Extend Your 4D Solution to the Web and Beyond

What if you could have a tablet, smartphone and desktop Web browser of your 4D solution with minimal effort? YES you can, thanks to 4D Mobile, which will put your application right in your users' hands.

For years, you've had the ability to host Web pages directly from 4D. With 4D Mobile, you can now extend your 4D solution into a full-featured Web application carrying all of your data and business logic logic to tablets, smartphones or any Web browsers.

Many users, one mass of data

In many environments, you'll have a group of people – anywhere from two to two thousand! – who need to do the same types of work with the same pool of data.
Client-server
Connecting a client to 4D Server can be as
simple as a click... or more advanced

With the client/server model, the people in question use the client (the front-end with the user interface you created in 4D) to create, manipulate or otherwise interact data on the server (the back-end you programmed, taking advantage of 4D’s database).

Get even more

From the get-go, you can use 4D to create runtime, standalone, and client-server applications. You can even serve web applications with 4D's built-in web server. But for those who want to do even more, we offer a variety of options to further expand on your vision.

4D's powerful plug-in architecture means you can add 4D View and 4D Write for spreadsheet and word processing capabilities to your apps, respectively. Countless third-party plug-ins are also available, many of them made by and freely shared in the 4D Community.

To each his own... deployment

For every type of end-user, there’s a 4D application waiting for them. But not every solution is the same. Whether you need single-user, cross-platform, client-server, or Web-based deployment – or all of the above – 4D ensures your users get what they need.
4D application

Standalone

Reports of the single-user application’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. People still want a desktop solution, whether it’s a runtime application developed in-house, or a compiled double-clickable application that will be resold to the world. Either way, 4D has you covered.
