What is RSS?

RSS is an XML-based format for the distribution of Web content through applications that are known as 'aggregators' or 'readers'.Web content providers use RSS to easily create and disseminate feeds of data, typically headlines and summaries with links back to the full story on their Web site. Here are examples of other sites using RSS to distribute content: Yahoo News and CNET News.com.

How can you use RSS?

You can use RSS to acquire data feeds from content providers like 4D, Inc. You can use a program known as a News Aggregator to collect, update and display RSS feeds. Or you can incorporate RSS feeds into weblogs.

News Aggregators, also known as Readers, download and display RSS feeds for you. There are a number of free and commercial News Aggregators available for download. Some of the more popular news readers include AmphetaDesk, NetNewsWire, FeedReader, and Radio Userland.

Many people use RSS feeds to incorporate content into weblogs. Weblogs, commonly referred to as “blogs”, are Web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and links. Blogs are used for such things as traditional journalism, personal journals, and group discussions around a topic.
